David F. Routon influenced generations of artists, not only through his teaching, but through his own work. Routon was an artist who was particularly skilled at drawing and at working with the human figure. Routon’s images are complex and painstakingly thought out and vary in degrees of what some might consider completion: some are fully rendered, others are suggested in varying degrees of incompleteness. He drew inspiration from film, from historic photography, from artists ranging from Caravaggio to Larry Rivers, and from life. The importance of music in his life is reflected in his works for the Lincoln Chamber Music Society.
